EKET LG BOSS INAUGURATES ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION/BEATIFICATION COMMITTEE

Eket Local Government Chairman, Hon. Frank Acrhibong who is the ALGON chairman, yesterday Tuesday 2018 inaugurated the Environmental Sanitation/Beautification Committee saddled with the task of improving the sanitary condition of Eket the Oil city.

The Council boss Hon. Archibong has said the inauguration of an environmental sanitation committee for the council is to sustain the good environmental condition, the committee for the exercise was tagged "EKET CLEAN AND GREEN INITIATIVE ".

Archibong, recalled the environmental condition in Eket in the past, adding that the special sanitation exercise ordered by the state governor and the deployment of officials of the Ministry of Environmental and the Waste Management Board has helped in turning the situation around.

"The exercise is ongoing in Uyo and i am bringing it down to Eket so we can join hands to keep our community clean" he said.

He said the new committee is part of the council’s efforts to sustain clean environments along major roads in Eket, markets and every part of the area, adding that the exercise will always commence three times in a week.

Furthermore, Archibong said the situation requires good initiatives such as the setting up of the committee expected to work as a team and that those appointed into the committee have accepted to offer voluntary service. He donated kits to the committee adding that grass cutting machines will soon be available for use by the team.

The committee will operate within the limits of existing environmental sanitation law, edicts and by-laws. However the ALGON Chairman warned that members should not engage in fraudulent practices or engage in extortion as such vices will defeat the purpose for which the committee has been set up.

In his response, the Supervisor for Environment Eket LGA Council Lady Esta Nta commended Hon. Frank Archibong for his attention to the environment and his involvement in the exercise. She lamented the indiscriminate and uncontrolled dumping of waste on our roads and streets, thereby grossly depleting the aesthetics of our council area.

"It is pertinent to note that the threats to environment by human increased alarmingly over the years, we all owe a duty and responsibility to make our environment cleaner and safer place to live in for ourselves as well as for our next generation,"

“The essence of the environmental marshals is in line with Governor Udom Emmanuel agenda to maintain healthy and clean environment throughout the entire state,” Nta said.

Speaking with news men, She said that the environmental marshals would enforce environmental laws and clean up waterways and gutters to ensure free flow of water and avert blockages and flooding in the rainy season.

Lady Nta, appealed to the general public to co- operate with the marshals by cleaning their environment and observing the state monthly sanitation exercise which holds on the last Saturday of every month from 8am to 10 am. Adding that her office will soon embark on radio awareness(Jingles and public announcement) to ensure that the general pupil is inform on the need to keep a healthy and clean environment.
